Description

Carlos Casares' life (1941-2002) was marked by a defense of Galicia (the northwest region of Spain) and its culture. This was achieved through his position as a high school and college professor, congressman in the Galician Parliament from 1981 to 1985, director of Galaxia, one of the main Galician publishing houses (1985), member of the "Consello da Cultura Galega" ("Galician Culture Council", an institution dedicated to the expansion of the use of Galician language and the protection of organizations that promote Galician language and culture) and member of the Galician Royal Academy since 1977 . A very close friend of Ramon Pineiro (who founded Galaxia and reorganized the Galician nationalist party clandestinely), Casares also befriended writers such as Manuel Rivas, Mario Vargas Llosa and Jose Saramago, with whom he shared many of his literary views; Rivas himself affirmed that Casares was a writer of the best Galician linage, although his life ended too soon to develop to his full potential. One of his most well known works is Vento ferido ("Wounded Wind", 1967), a collection of twelve stories in which the protagonists, all men, try to find meaning in their existence in the middle of a distressed world that judges and rejects them not only as men but most notably as human beings. One of these stories entitled "Monologo" ("Monologue") shows how the techniques used in its narrative, particularly the interior monologue, help to emphasize the loneliness and desperation that the character (and Galician society) was suffering in the 1950s.
